feasibility
The artist ( nathaniel
stern ) will construct a fairly simple, non-secure site; he may hire
a cheap web guru for help with the back end (likely PHP and SQL, but may
be as simple as javascript and 2 comma-delineated text files). It will
use simple programming to test for email addresses of gamers, and make
sure that they do not vote more than once (this will, inevitably, fail
miserably, given how easy it is to get many email addresses). In a separate
file, the email addresses of those voted on
(our artists that will get money - you may vote for yourself)
will be stored. It is a write-in ballot.
This will all be on an FTP server, without a firewall. Roll back &
back up of the actual front end and voting technology will occur once
daily on the server. The roll back is to overwrite hacks not related to
the game's final outcome; however, these are still part of the game, so
will remain up and in play until midnight whenever hacked. The "gamer
email address" testing file and the "winners/artists email address"
file will never be overwritten by the artist or the hosting service. Hacks
will remain until hacked again.
The back-ups of the front end will be saved for an ar[t]chive site, to
be constructed and launched within 2 months following the distribution
of funds.
We will announce the artistgame.com launch / start-game formally.
There may be (false/hacked/who knows?) clues as to when the voting will
be tallied, but no formal announcement will be made. Even when all votes
are in (points used up - will likely happen quickly), the site will not
come down - this may indeed be when the real game begins for serious players.
Finally, I will use the email addresses provided for our artists by the
gaming public in order to contact the winners and deposit money into their
paypal accounts - they must have, or sign up for, a valid paypal account
to receive their funds. 1 point = $1, and the funds get distributed as
such, whether there be 2000 separate $1 winners, or 1 artist who gets
it all.
Money left from non-valid email addresses, or artists who do not want
their funding for whatever reason, will be donated to rhizome.org.
